This Saturday, a new batch of music legends will be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland. I have chosen four of my favorites to showcase here, but you can check out the whole list by clicking this link.
Barabajagal, Donovan (1969)
You know I loves me some Donovan. I’m shocked it has taken so long to get him into the Hall of Fame, to be honest. I dig his sound and it’s about time. Barabajagal is groovadelic deliciousness. I would spread it on toast if I could. It’s also contains a good narrative, though if you want to hear my very favorite narrative, from Donovan or anyone, check out The Art of the Narrative post.
Sabotoge, Beastie Boys (1994)
Great band, great video, and so many moustaches! The Beastie Boys know how to have a good time, and have been having good times across 3 decades now. I wrote about them back in my Free Samples post, and they really are geniuses when it comes to mixing and matching songs and creating something entirely new.
Big Legged Woman, Freddie King (1972)
A “big legged woman in a short, short mini skirt” goes perfectly with that super-fly collar on Freddie’s shirt. ”The Texas Cannonball” was one of the first people to have an integrated band back when that sort of thing was frowned upon in some circles, and is named as an influence by Eric Clapton, Jerry Garcia and Stevie Ray Vaughn to name a few. Freddie was touring around 300 days a year and to save time while setting up shows he was known to drink Bloody Mary’s in lieu of eating. This most certainly contributed to his death from pancreatitis and complications from stomach ulcers at the age of 42.
Please Please Please, The Flames (1956)
Before James Brown was the Godfather of Soul, he was a Famous Flame. Actually, they started out as The Flames, then later became James Brown and his Famous Flames. Even as James embarked on his solo career, he kept the Flames as his back-up. This year there are a number of “back-up” bands getting inducted; The Crickets of Buddy Holly fame and The Miracles, Smokey Robinson’s band, to name a couple. I’m glad they are getting their due, ’cause it takes more than a pretty face and some sweet dance moves to sound great.
